About Concourse

Concourse was created in 2014 at Pivotal to build Cloud Foundry. Pipelines are declarative YAML files built from three primitives: resources (git repos, images, S3 buckets, time), jobs and tasks. Every task runs in a fresh container, which makes builds reproducible and keeps workers stateless. Pipelines are managed with the fly CLI and visualized in a web UI as a dependency graph, encouraging pipelines-as-code with no click-ops configuration.

Key Features

Declarative YAML pipelines built from resources, jobs and tasks
Every task runs in an isolated container
Pluggable resource types for git, registries, S3, time and more
fly CLI for setting pipelines and running one-off builds
Pipeline visualization as a dependency graph
Stateless workers that scale horizontally

Pros

Highly reproducible builds through container isolation
Pipelines fully defined as code with no UI configuration
Simple, consistent mental model with only three primitives
Clear visualization of how artifacts flow through the pipeline

Cons

Smaller ecosystem and community than Jenkins or GitHub Actions
Steep initial learning curve for the resource model
Running workers and the web/ATC node requires operations effort
Fewer built-in conveniences (e.g. matrix builds) than mainstream CI services
