About Apache NiFi

Apache NiFi originated at the US National Security Agency as 'Niagarafiles' and was donated to the Apache Software Foundation in 2014. Data flows are built by connecting processors on a drag-and-drop canvas; each piece of data (a FlowFile) is tracked end to end with full provenance. NiFi provides back pressure, prioritized queues, guaranteed delivery and hundreds of processors for databases, message queues, cloud storage and APIs, making it a common choice for data ingestion and ETL. NiFi 2.x added Python processors and a modernized UI.

Key Features

Drag-and-drop flow design in a web UI
300+ built-in processors for databases, Kafka, cloud storage, HTTP and more
End-to-end data provenance for every FlowFile
Guaranteed delivery, back pressure and prioritized queues
Clustering for horizontal scale
Python processors (NiFi 2.x) and custom Java extensions
Flow versioning with NiFi Registry

Pros

Visual design makes complex data routing easy to understand
Excellent data provenance and auditability
Robust delivery semantics for continuous ingestion
Mature Apache project with a large processor library

Cons

Resource hungry (JVM, disk-based repositories)
Flows are harder to code-review and test than code-first pipelines
Not designed for complex task dependencies or batch scheduling like DAG orchestrators
Clustering and security configuration has a learning curve
