About Inngest

With Inngest, functions are triggered by events or schedules and broken into steps (step.run, step.sleep, step.waitForEvent). Each step is retried and memoized independently, so long-running workflows survive failures and deploys without managing queues or workers. Inngest calls your existing HTTP endpoints, which makes it work on serverless platforms such as Vercel, Netlify or AWS Lambda as well as on long-running servers. Flow control features like concurrency limits, throttling, debouncing, rate limiting and prioritization are built in, and a local Dev Server provides a UI for testing.

Key Features

Event- and cron-triggered functions
Durable steps: step.run, step.sleep, step.waitForEvent, step.invoke
Automatic retries and memoization per step
Flow control: concurrency, throttling, rate limiting, debounce, priority
Works with serverless platforms over HTTP (no workers to manage)
Local Dev Server with a UI for testing and replay
AI workflow helpers (step.ai) for LLM calls

Pros

Great developer experience for TypeScript and serverless apps
No queues or worker infrastructure to manage
Powerful built-in flow control
Durable workflows without a separate orchestration DSL

Cons

Server license is source-available (SSPL), not OSI open source
Self-hosting is newer than the managed cloud offering
Less suited for heavy data/ETL workloads
Pricing for the cloud service is based on executions/steps
