About Mage

Mage (mage-ai) is a modern alternative to Airflow for data engineering. Pipelines are composed of blocks (data loaders, transformers, data exporters, sensors) written in Python, SQL or R and edited in an interactive, notebook-like UI that previews data as you build. Mage supports batch pipelines, streaming pipelines, data integrations based on Singer taps and targets, dbt models, triggers on schedules, events or API calls, and runs locally with Docker or on Kubernetes and cloud services.

Key Features

Interactive notebook-style editor with live data previews
Modular blocks: data loaders, transformers, exporters and sensors
Python, SQL and R blocks in the same pipeline
Batch, streaming and data integration (Singer) pipelines
Native dbt support
Schedule, event and API triggers
Built-in data validation tests per block

Pros

Fast feedback loop thanks to inline data previews
Easier onboarding than Airflow for data engineers
Reusable, testable blocks encourage clean pipeline code
Simple local setup with pip or Docker

Cons

Smaller ecosystem and community than Airflow
Some advanced features are part of the commercial Mage Pro offering
UI-centric workflow may not suit every team's code review process
Less proven for very large-scale deployments
