About n8n
n8n (pronounced “n-eight-n”) is a low-code / visual workflow automation platform that lets you connect multiple apps, services, and APIs via nodes, triggers, and actions. You can self-host it or use their managed service, add custom code (JavaScript, TypeScript, HTTP requests) where needed, and build complex branching logic, loops, and integrations. Its “fair-code” license lets internal use be open, while commercial redistribution is restricted.
Key Features
Visual node-based workflow editor
Over 400+ integrations / nodes
Triggers (webhooks, cron, polling) and action nodes
Support for custom JavaScript / code nodes
Branching, conditional logic, loops, error handling
Self-hosting or n8n Cloud
Replay / debugging and execution logs
Support for AI / LLM workflows within nodes (via integrations)
Queue / worker mode for scale
Pros
Very flexible and extensible (you can insert custom code)
Rich ecosystem of integrations out-of-box
Visual interface lowers barrier to entry
Can self-host to avoid vendor lock-in
Supports advanced logic (loops, branching, error handling, parallelism)
Has AI / LLM integration features built in
Cons
Complex workflows can become messy graphically
You may need infrastructure overhead when self-hosting (workers, queues, etc.)
Some advanced capabilities (scaling, concurrency) require understanding of internal modes
License is not fully “open source” in the sense of unrestricted commercial use (fair-code / SUL)
Debugging in some edge cases of custom code nodes or API integrations can get tricky
